  However, there is one, and only one, advantage of slavery in a small republic. When, a state becomes opulent because of the improvement of arts, going out to war is thought as a great hardship.   But when opulence and luxury increased, the rich would take the field only on the most urgent account.   Another cause of their decline was the improvement of the art of war.   Rome stood out much longer than Greece, because its population was increasing daily.   Around 40 years after, the same thing happened between Caesar and Pompey.
